How do I stop Facebook from editing my ad creatives?

The edits come from Advantage+ creative enhancements: features like image touch-ups, text improvements, auto-crop and generated variations that Meta applies at delivery, many of them on by default. There is no single master switch; you opt out of each enhancement individually on each ad's creative, in Ads Manager under the creative's optimisation options, or via the API by setting each feature's enroll_status to OPT_OUT in creative_features_spec. Then verify, because an opt-out you never check is a preference, not a guarantee.

What Meta changes without asking

The enhancement family includes visual adjustments such as brightness, contrast and touch-ups, automatic cropping and uncropping to fit placements, text improvements that rephrase or re-emphasise your copy, added music, catalog-style additions, and generated variations of your creative. The served ad can therefore differ from the approved ad in composition, wording and sound, varying per impression. For a direct-response account with loose brand rules some of this is harmless or helpful; for brands with reviewed claims or precise visual identity it means legal-approved copy can be rephrased and composed frames re-cropped, silently, at delivery time, which is usually what prompts this question.

Why you keep finding new toggles

Meta retired the old bundled Standard Enhancements switch in early 2025 and replaced it with per-feature entries inside the creative's creative_features_spec. Two operational consequences follow. First, opting out is per feature and per creative, so there is nothing you can set once at the account level and forget. Second, the feature list grows: Meta ships new enhancement types over time, and a newly introduced feature can default to on for creatives that opted out of everything that existed before it. A durable policy therefore has to be a posture, opt out of every eligible feature at launch time, rather than a checklist frozen at whatever the list contained the day you wrote it.

Opting out in Ads Manager

At the ad level, open the creative section and find the Advantage+ creative or optimisation options area, then expand it and switch off each listed feature individually. Expect the set of features to differ by format, since video, static and carousel creatives expose different enhancements, and expect labels to shift as Meta renames things. Two habits prevent regressions: check the section on every newly built ad rather than assuming defaults carried over, because fresh creatives reset to defaults, and re-check after major Ads Manager interface updates, which occasionally reorganise where these controls live. Duplicated ads generally inherit their source's choices, which makes duplication slightly safer than fresh builds.

Opting out at the API level

Programmatically, enhancements are controlled through the creative's degrees_of_freedom_spec containing a creative_features_spec, where each feature name maps to an enroll_status of OPT_IN or OPT_OUT. Tools and scripts that launch ads can therefore apply a complete opt-out policy uniformly at creation time, which is the only approach that scales past a handful of ads. The subtlety is that Meta strips features that are ineligible for a given creative from the stored spec without warning, so the spec you wrote and the spec that exists can differ. Any serious implementation writes the opt-outs, reads the creative back, and diffs the result against intent.

Verification is the half people skip

An unverified opt-out fails silently in several ways: a feature was renamed and your old spec no longer references it, a new feature appeared on by default, an edit rebuilt the creative and reset defaults, or the interface toggle did not do what its label implied that quarter. The countermeasure is reading back what Meta stored for each launched ad and comparing it against your policy, per creative, after every launch. Volume Creatives does this automatically, opting out of every eligible enhancement at launch and then verifying the stored state against the requested one. By hand, spot-check a sample of each batch in the creative's settings, and re-audit the account whenever Meta announces new enhancement types.

Deciding what deserves the effort

Blanket opposition to enhancements is a policy, not a law of nature, and some features are measurably neutral or positive on some accounts. The cases where strict opt-out clearly earns its overhead: regulated categories where served copy must match reviewed copy, brands whose visual identity is commercially load-bearing, and structured creative tests, where an enhancement varying the creative per impression quietly invalidates the comparison you are spending money to run. A reasonable middle position runs enhancements on in broad evergreen prospecting and strictly off in tests and compliance-sensitive campaigns, documented, so performance differences between the two regimes are at least explainable.

Enhancement names, defaults and eligibility rules are Meta's to change and they change often. The per-feature opt-out mechanism and the write-then-verify pattern are the durable parts of this page; any specific feature list is a snapshot.
